Real talk
Once bought, never bought again
This is the one gift that doesn't end up in the charity shop. Jaques' Animal Dominoes are hand-painted on solid wood, weighted enough to feel real in small hands, and built the way toys were made in 1795. They teach pattern matching and counting without a screen in sight.
You buy this once. Your sister buys it once. Her children play it, then yours do. That's the maths on a Jaques set.
Joe Jaques, Jaques of London

While they play
Quietly teaches while they play
Looks like play. Works like a lesson.
Pattern matching
Spotting which domino comes next isn't luck,it's learning. Toddlers start with shape spotting. By 5, they're thinking two moves ahead.
Counting and numeracy
Each domino has pips to count. No formal lesson, just natural maths woven into the game. Builds mental maths without drills.
Concentration
Dominoes demand quiet focus. Fifteen minutes of sustained attention without distraction. A rare gift in a noisy world.
Turn-taking and calm
Play together at the pace of the slowest player. No timer, no pressure. Children learn patience and cooperation naturally.

Questions & answers
Questions parents ask before ordering
Buying for a 6th birthday,is this the one?
Yes. At 6, they can hold the dominoes, spot patterns without help, and play a full game. They'll play this for years. Catherine McCulloch says it's 'perfect gift for any babies' 1st birthday' and works just as well at 6 and beyond.
Why does it cost more than the plastic version?
Solid wood costs more to buy, hand-painting takes time, and the finish is designed to survive a childhood. Cost-per-year, though, it's pennies. Played for years, passed on, that's the heirloom maths. Manda Monium calls it 'worth every penny full price.'
Will it actually survive my house?
Yes. It's not the usual tat from China,John A. Solid wood, hand-finished, weighted to survive rough play. Karen Pepper confirms, 'Toys that don't break after five minutes of play.' If it doesn't, you have 30 days to return it. Until 31 January 2027, Jaques backs this set.
How fast will it arrive if I need it by a date?
Order by 2pm, and it ships within 2,3 business days. Leigh Hemmings reports it 'arrived next day, saved Christmas.' Gift-wrapped as standard, so it's ready to give when it lands.
How much does it cost?
The Animal Dominoes - Wildlife Game is £12.99 today (down from £23.99). Klarna is available at checkout if you prefer to spread the cost.
What's your returns policy?
30 days, full refund, no conditions. Return it for any reason and we refund in full. We've been standing behind what we make since 1795.

Our story
Making toys worth keeping since 1795.
Jaques of London was founded in 1795. We invented croquet, table tennis, and the Staunton chess set. For 230 years, we've been making things that pull children away from passive entertainment and into active, curious, hands-on play.
Jaques has been making games for 231 years because we learned early: a toy made right becomes a memory. Animal Dominoes start simple, matching, counting, pattern play, but they stick around. A child plays them at 2, their sibling plays at 4, and years later, they're still in the cupboard. That's why we hand-paint each animal, choose solid wood over composite, and build them to last a childhood. It costs more upfront. It saves money, waste, and space over time.
Toys and games that leave something behind: a skill, a memory, a piece of play that gets passed on.
