Ages 3 and 4 need an adult working alongside them - supervise the chipping, let them brush. Ages 5 and up dig mostly solo. By 6 or 7 they're fully independent. This bundle grows with them - start with one kit at 3, revisit the other two as their control improves.

Will the gems and fossils actually come out, or will they shatter?

They come out. We've tuned the plaster hardness over years so a child's gentle chipping works without cracking the prize inside. Go too hard with a hammer and yes, things break - but normal digging (which is half the fun) works perfectly. That's why it takes 30-45 minutes, not 5.

Do I need to buy batteries or an app or anything else?

Jaques of London was founded in 1795. We invented croquet, table tennis, and the Staunton chess set. For 230 years, we've been making things that pull children away from passive entertainment and into active, curious, hands-on play.
